{"id":54,"date":"2013-05-07T01:51:45","date_gmt":"2013-05-07T01:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/natkale.com\/?p=54"},"modified":"2016-07-23T13:22:40","modified_gmt":"2016-07-23T18:22:40","slug":"visualizing-water-quality-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/natkale.com\/?p=54","title":{"rendered":"Visualizing Water Quality Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For the past few months I&#8217;ve been getting into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edwardtufte.com\/tufte\/books_vdqi\">Edward Tufte&#8217;s approach to visualizing data<\/a>.<!--more--> Main points I&#8217;ve taken away thus far &#8211; minimize ink on the page; use formatting to guide the reader; use the right visualization for the data (if you have 10 data points, a graph is probably overkill). Turns out designing good data visualization is tough, so I&#8217;ve been practicing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/natkale.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/graph.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-57\" alt=\"Water Quality Graph\" src=\"https:\/\/natkale.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/graph-300x212.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/natkale.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/graph-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/natkale.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/graph-1024x726.png 1024w, https:\/\/natkale.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/graph.png 1264w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-57\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A box and whisker style plot, a la Tufte.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I made up a box and whisker style dynamic graph (since removed) of the water quality data available for the Watershed District I work for using <a href=\"http:\/\/d3js.org\/\">D3.js<\/a>.
